In 1969 he moved to his adopted home of Plymouth to join Rod Mason.  When Mason joined Acker Bilk in 1970, Roy formed another band which worked exclusively on the continent for the next decade until, fed up with 'life on the road', he returned to Plymouth.
Since then, he has combined playing locally with researching and writing BBC Radio 2's 'Jazz Score' series  (1981- 1997).  In November 1992 BBC Books published 'The Best of Jazz Score' - a collection of anecdotes and one-liners which Roy compiled from the first 150 programmes.

Stop Press  THE HOT FOUR is no more

Roy's many fans were doubtless saddened to hear of the demise of the 'Hot  Four' in October 2002. Formed in 1986, the group quickly proved popular and was soon in demand all over the South West. Their regular Radio 2 broadcasts, record reviews and cassette sales gave then an enviable  reputation nationwide.

MEET THE DIXIE FIVE

However,  the good news is that  Roy is still going strong, with two new line-ups.
He says he is looking forward to the flexibility the new instrumentation will provide.
We say 'Brilliant' .
