Our line-up comprises trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass and drums and we all share the vocals. Tony, our guitarist, switches to banjo for some of the early jazz numbers. We normally dress formally for our engagements but, for informal gigs, we can switch to band T shirts if required.
What Kind of Music do you play ?
The jazz, ballads and blues from the 1930's that we play covers material made famous by Louis Armstrong, Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, Fats Waller and many more. The tunes include many 'standards' written by composers such as Irving Berlin, George Gershwin , Jerome Kern and Cole Porter.
Many of the ballads are ideally suited to weddings and anniversaries and include classics such as Sweet Lorraine, You brought a new kind of love to me, I'm putting all my eggs in one basket and I can't give you anything but love.
What kind of venues do you play ?
We have played at almost every kind of engagement… Weddings, parties, Anniversaries, Corporate Events, Concerts, Country Fairs, Rallies, Hospital Openings, River Cruises...You name it, We've played it !
In the past four years, we have played at the majority of Cornwall's most prestigious venues including The Eden Project; The Scillonian; The Royal Cornwall Show; The Acorn Theatre; St Michael's Mount; Pendennis Castle; Trebah Gardens; RNAS Culdrose and RAF St Mawgan, as well as most of the major hotels. We have also played for numerous private parties in houses and gardens throughout the Duchy. On the basis of the number of different occasions and locations booked for 2002 we can justly claim to be Cornwall's most popular Jazz and Blues Band.
Why are you called 'Funny Feathers' ?
Funny Feathers is the title of a song recorded back in the 1920's by a Blues singer called Victoria Spivey. In the background can be heard the cornet of a very young Louis Armstrong. We all liked the silly lyrics and called the Band after the song.
JAZZ FOR ALL SEASONS 2002
THREE WAYS OF ENJOYING TRADITIONAL JAZZ IN AND OUT OF DOORS
Funny Feathers - Five or Four ~ Playing happy music from the 1930's.
Funny Feathers Jazz Six. ~ A full scale Trad Jazz Band that shares the same repertoire but is more suited to larger venues. Like the quintet, we are mainly acoustic in approach, with amplification used only on the guitar, bass and vocals. NB Either band will play without drowning out your conversations.
Papa Dave's Dixie Wanderers ~ A totally acoustic street band which can lead parades and processions or wander through an audience at a Garden Party. Because no electricity is used, the Band is totally mobile and aims to capture the magic of the great New Orleans Parade Bands which can still be seen in the Crescent City today. The number of musicians varies from five to twenty according to the size of job.
